The main reason they moved was because Land Rover had decided to create a direct injection diesel engine to replace the 2.5 normally aspirated, indirect injection units, and wanted someone with performance management experience to develop this type of engine.
At the time small direct injection engines were extremely rear. The fuel in the type of engine is injected directly into the top of the cylinder instead of a separate pre combustion chamber hence the name. Direct injection diesel engine had previously only been used the trucks and large marine application because they didn’t have the speed range required for smaller vehicles. Typical they’d only rev to 2000- 2500rpm and then wouldn’t work very well above that speed.
