It was a timely strock of genius in August 1990, Britain and her alies went to war in the Middle East defending Kuwait against an aggressive invader, Sadam Hussein. The British Army and its huge fleet of Land Rovers appeared on our TV screen every day. What better time could there be to reinvent the humble utility vehicle, and what better name Defender?
But like any great tactical advance the 200TDI powered Land Rover Defender was the result of careful planning and development. Les Wikling was a member of the small team of engineers who created this world beating engine.
Land Rover in 1984 through an internal transfer from Leyland truck in Lancashire, were had been developing diesel truck engines. At that time two companies were both still part of the Leyland vehicles family.
