WHICH MODEL AND ENGINE

Land Rover Series II production ran from 1958 to 1961. Series IIA production was 1961 to 1971. So if the logbook is right for your vehicle, you’ve a Series II A. A1967 Series IIA Land Rover should have the 2.25 litre three main bearing engine, and the number stamped on it should be in the series 2410000 upwards.
Land Rover 2.25 and 2.25 litre petrol engines all look similar but you can visually identify the engine type. Look at the upright side of the block below the manifolds, in the area surrounding the dipstick. If the engine block has smooth sides and is painted a light blue, green this is the 2.25 litre three main bearing engine. If the engine block has a raised diagonal pattern of rib stiffeners on the side and is painted a red brown colour, this is the block which was used for the 2.25 litre five main bearing engines and for the 2.25 litre engines.
How to tell which one it is? Check the timing cover. An engine with the narrower timing cover has a timing chain, so it’s a 2.25 litre engine. If there’s a wider timing cover, that’s for the 2.5’s toothed rubber timing belt.
