A technical lap forward was needed to create what became known as high speed direct injection engines that could produce 4000rpm, and fit into passenger sized vehicles. There were very few engine that were even coming close to this. There was a Fiat Transit 2.5litre van engine that came out in 1984, Fiat also had a direct injection unit and we know that Parking was working on what would become the Prima engine.
Small high speed direct injection engine were still in the early stage of development and not very refined. The first thing he got involved in Land Rover was evaluating the Ford and First engines. Running them on test rings measured everything, took them to bits and examined them very closely. I also talking to expertise lay. Engineering companies like AVL Ricardo and others to find out where the greatest level of expertise lay.
