It was probably the best part of a year’s work, to find out what sort of engine we should make and who we out to work with. By 1986 they really got going a0nd we decided that AVL, in Austria, was the best consultancy for us to develop the engine with. At the time, they seemed to know the most about the project.
It was decided that they try to evolve the new engine out of the existing 2.5 naturally aspirated one, mainly because the company had recently invested a large amount of cash in a new production facility for it. It was effectively told; this is the machine you can modify it but you can’t buy a new one.
The engine had to have the same bore spacing and preferably the same block line, then modifying it rather than building a new one. However the cylinder head was completely new because there was nothing they could salvage from the old one.
