Originally the new engine was designed to be non turbo version right through the final stages of testing. Although the non turbo direct injection prototypes didn’t make into production, a pair of them did make it to Austria more lately.
An electrical aspect of high speed direct injector diesel design is the injection system itself in a naturally aspirated diesel; the fuel and air are mixed together in a pre combustion chamber before ignition. This is much easier to achieve then in a direct injection engine, where very precise amounts of fuel are injected directly into the top of the piston.
This is much more difficult to do and this is where AVL’s know how came to the fore. The fuel injection pump suddenly becomes a much more difficult component to design and manufacture, the injection pressures are much higher. The old 2.5 normally aspirated engine run at 350 bars and the 200TDI has a maximum of about 700 bar the latest TD5 s are around 1500bar.
