Traditionally the company had used Lucas but partly on the advice of AVL we approached Bosch for the injection system. They worked with them for some time but there were real problem with the injectors. Large direct injection engine in the trucks are fairly noisy, so they had to come up with a better way of quit enough for Discovery and Defender.
Initially they worked with Bosch on a mechanical pilot. Each injector has a really clever thing on the end, which allows a small amount of fuel to be injected into the engine to start the combustion fairly quietly, then delivers the rest of the fuel. Today this is normal; every common rail diesel has electronically operated pilots, so it’s now the norm. They were on the cutting edge trying to develops it, and Bosh wasn’t sure to it would be able to manufacture the mechanical pilots.
