Our evaluation fleet consisted of for Land Rovers, two powered by Bosch injection system one turbo and one non turbo and a similar pair with Lucas system. Because of the uncertainty, we contacted Lucas developing a completely separate, but parallel set of engines fitted with Lucas injection system.
Bosch had no idea what they were up to and still thought it was the only kid on the block. In Austria for routine meeting with AVL and all key suppliers, it was a bit of kick up the backside for Bosch and it felt as if the entire problem magically went away after this meeting. They realized that they were seriously comparing both injection systems and that they might not get the contract if they couldn’t solve the problem with the mechanical pilot injectors.
So solve it they did. Bosch designed a new type of injector, instead of a mechanical pilot the new injectors had a two spring design which partially opens, to give lower power injection to start the combustion, before opening fully millisecond later, to deliver the rest of the fuel.
