DRAINING THE OILS

If you decided not to remove the Discovery axle differentials. It move under the own power with the center diff unlocked, so we know both diffs are working. But even if you aren’t taking them out, you can check the condition of the oil. Regular replacement is beneficial, especially if the Land Rover has been used off road (we know the Discovery has).

The first job is to clean around the filler and drain plugs. If you do it before they are unscrewed, no dirt will get into the fresh oil you’re putting in. undo the filler before the drain plug. Unless you have an anti gravity pump, you won’t to be able to get the oil in if the filler plug has seized.
When the oil has drained, check it for debris large chunks of metal will definitely require further investigation, but a few minute filling shouldn’t be a problem.
