It’s easy to get your head around the meaning of miles per gallon and, if you go back to basics, even miles per litre become slightly comprehensible. Fuel consumption is closely related to CO2 output, and no mpg figure is quoted nowadays without being accompanied by its corresponding pollution figure. But does anyone really have foggiest idea of what the 398 g/km of CO2 that a P38 Range Rover V8 kicks out, actually mean’s by comparison with other vehicles we know it’s lot, enough for it to have become a potential planet threatener.
Land Rover is cleaning up fast, though its latest Freelander 2 puts out a paltry 265 grammes per kilometer in i6 petrol from and only 194 g/km from the manual TD4 diesel variant. Incidentally, for anyone who has missed the talk, Freelander 2’s TD4, confusingly, is not the TD4 we all know.
